“Fancy meeting you here...” - Popular Idiom
February 13 :: Day 15
I love Instagram. I appreciate it for all the beautiful art and photography, for connecting with people with photos and stories from across the planet, and for sneakily tracking your friends.
I’m always a few weeks behind it seems in my insta. I’m the queen of catching up and #latergrams. But I am thankful for those that post on-the-fly.
When @beejshank and @johndouglashill flipped across my feed with photos of New Zealand, while we were trekking north, I couldn’t believe it. I adore these two amazing men. They are dear friends of mine from home that have lived a 10 minute walk away from me for ages but that I only ever see, if I’m lucky, once a year. We do however have a track record of meeting up, rather spontaneously, while travelling. Our last adventure brought us together for an incredible weekend in Halifax... and now, our paths were crossing as they were arriving by ferry to the South Island, and we were less than an hour away.
We left Tasman and wound our way to Picton via the scenic route... Crystal playing Mario Cart with our hybrid along the way. We parked the car, and glanced over to the patio beside us. There was no mistaking those smiles. Ben and John beamed and waved. These two are truly two of my favourite people in the world.
What are the chances to meet halfway across the world to exchange hugs and catch up? What are the odds that we would cross paths at almost precisely the same time? Apparently pretty good, it seems. I expect the next time we meet for a drink and a meal will be somewhere equally as beautiful... but perhaps next time we won’t wait for fate to be in charge, or Instagram to bring us together.
